Santiponce

Santiponce

Santiponce is a small town just outside of Sevilla.  The Roman city of
Italica is found here, and dates to 260 BC.  The ruins are found in different locations.
This is the town plaza.

A small amphitheater in the plaza.
The old Roman theater.

The Roman theater is now used for city performances.  A very cool venue!

Greg wanted to get on the stage so badly, and ended up
making a bit of a scene.  Just can't take him anywhere!

In a different location is the Roman Colosseum.  A pretty park was just outside.

Entrance to the Colosseum.

Where the lions are kept.

The arena held 25,000 spectators.  It was the third largest in the Roman  Empire.
Where the gladiators were kept.

This would be under the floor of the arena, where the lions were kept.

Near the Colosseum is a large spread out Roman city,  called Italica.
Emperor Hadrian (of Hadrian's Wall) was born in this city.
Unfortunately, during the medieval times this Roman city was
used as a source of stone for Sevilla. It is still an amazing site, though.

The site was huge.
