Merida

MERIDA

Merida has the "mother load" of Roman ruins.  The city was not nearly
as charming and picturesque as Caceres, but it had its own greatness.

Of course, it has a bullring.

Being short on time, we immediately headed to the largest area of Roman ruins.
Merida is also a World Heritage site.

Merida was also settled by the Romans in the last century BC.

The back of the arena.

This is the arena where the gladiators fought.

Glancing in the direction of the theater.

Inside the arena.

Where you see the dug out part, there used to be a wood platform.

Again, looking towards the theater.

Greg takes it easy while I run laps on the stairs.

Each kind of gladiator was depicted, as signs informed what
weapons each style of gladiator used, and who he fought.

The passage way for the gladiators.

It was an eerie feeling walking out onto the floor of the arena.

Heading over to the theater.

                                                     An incredibly impressive sight.

I guess you would call this the "Greenroom."  Back stage.

The shopping mall.

A very old well.

Caesar Augustus

He definitely has destructive tendencies.

I've had that same headache for years.

The Roman Museum that we did not have time for.

This Roman temple, of some kind, was sitting in the middle of downtown.

The Temple of Diana.  It was also sitting in the middle of town.

The castle.

An amazing Roman bridge.  It is now used only for foot traffic.

Views from the bridge.

The castle is on the left.

We took the first exit off the bridge, even though it went for a long way.
There was a split in the river with a long island in-between.

The river was so calm, and the day so pretty, that I was intrigued with the reflections.

Such a perfect reflection, making the openings look round.

The poor guy is always carrying my purse while I shoot pictures.

These guys were going really fast.

We had such a great day in Merida, and loved everything we saw.  After getting home
we discovered we missed an awesome Roman aqueduct.  We'll have to catch it next time.
